Governing Board Brief
February 27, 2018

The Board met for their monthly Business Board Meeting on Tuesday February 27, 2018.  The meeting began with an executive session to discuss the appointment of Mrs. Lana Moore as Principal for Canyon Rim Elementary, for the remainder of the 2017/18 school year.  

Mr Shane McCord, District Superintendent, recognized eight (8) K-8 students that took part in the district’s annual Oratorical contest.  Ocean Affo, a 7th grader from Gilbert Classical Academy, performed Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech. Mr McCord also recognized all 42 National Board Certified teachers in the district.

Members of the ‘Future Farmers of America’ (FFA), from Campo Verde, Gilbert High, and Desert Ridge High were present at the meeting when Mr McCord read the proclamation naming this week FFA week.

Melody Fraser, business teacher from Mesquite High School, presented to the Board, along with Heather Forcey, details of the new MC3 program starting in the 2018/19 school year at Mesquite High School.  The 3 year program is designed to equip students with the technology  skills they need for future employment and post-secondary pursuits.  Within the program there are opportunities to simultaneously earn college credit.


All items on the Consent Agenda (8.0) were approved with a 5.0 vote.

The Board then moved on to the Action items on the agenda.  The following were approved with a 5-0 vote:

  • 9.01 Approval of appointment of Principal for Canyon Rim Elementary for the remainder of this school year
  • 9.02 Consider, if deemed advisable, to adopt a resolution authorizing the issuance and sale of school improvement bonds of the district
  • 9.03 Approval of the 2018-19 Employee Contract Language and Terms
  • 9.04 Policy Development: First Read of Policy DJG - Vendor / Contractor Relations
  • 9.05 Policy Development: First Read of Policy DJGA - Sales Calls and Demonstrations
Before voting on the resolution authorizing the issuance and sale of school improvement bonds an attorney present, representing the district, presented a detailed plan to the Board.  Jeff Gadd, Assistant Superintendent, was also present to answer any questions.

Before voting on 2018-19 employee contract language and terms the Board were walked through all proposed changes by an attorney present.  Dr. Suzanne Zentner, Assistant Superintendent, was also present to answer any questions.

Action item 9.06 followed with a discussion of possible actions regarding an additional Board Retreat on fundamentals of Board protocol, core beliefs and commitments, vision, mission and Board traditions. The Board voted on a motion, following discussion, with a vote of 4:1.

The Board meeting broke out into another executive session to discuss pupil disciplinary proceedings and student expulsion as pursuant to A.R.S. 15-843. 

The Board meeting then concluded at 9:30pm.
